DIY Ambrosia Maple Floating Shelves

Being in the interior design space, it is no surprise that many of our very own employees are constantly working on home projects. With an array of decorative mouldings and accessories, it is hard to resist bringing these elements into our own homes.

While Kiannah Vandenberg, Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Manager at Novo Building Products, was in the process of renovating her 1940’s kitchen, she added an Ambrosia Maple Beam to the ceiling to separate the new open concept kitchen from the living room. After installing that beam, she fell in love with the way the wood tones brought warmth and natural texture to the space, so she knew she had to also include Ambrosia Maple for the floating shelves. Check out her story below.

The Plan

Sometimes, it can be impossible to find exactly the right shelves to fit your space. This is especially true when it comes to matching specific wood tones and dimensions. That is why many people look to build their own custom shelving to match their exact space.

Being very familiar with Ornamental products, Kiannah knew exactly what she needed to create these floating shelves for her space. As soon as the rest of the kitchen was complete with new backsplash, painted cabinets, and new appliances, she headed to her local Lowe’s store and purchased 3 Ambrosia Maple Boards, along with a 2x6 board that the decorative boards would cap.

“The plan was to utilize Ornamental’s Decorative Boards to cap over a basic interior 2x6 board to create beautiful decorative shelves. Then we would just need a custom bracket to attach to the wall.”

Installation

After taking careful measurements, she cut down the boards to cap perfectly over the 2x6 interior board. Next, she glued all of the pieces onto the 2x6, leaving just the back of the board exposed where they then drilled holes for the custom stainless steel bracket to be placed.

“The stainless steel brackets were custom-made by a local fabrication shop, and it worked perfectly to mount the shelves in the space. We had to use a diamond bit to drill through our backsplash, and the brackets slid right into place.”

Finished Space

These shelves were the final touch on a 6-month long project, and the finished space is such an incredible transformation from the original 1940’s kitchen.

“We painted the cabinets and walls a beautiful white to brighten up the space and knew we would need to add some natural wood tones to bring in more warmth. The Ambrosia Maple Beam and Boards were the perfect way to do that, and they have exceeded our expectations. After a long 6-month project, the kitchen is finally complete and we could not be happier with the new space. It feels like a brand new home!”
